This customer was looking to replace their current iron filter and water softener.  They had concerns with their current equipment's quality.  They were looking for treatment equipment that would last and be able to handle their water conditions because of the high amounts of iron and hardness in the water. Garrett, our project coordinator, was able to find them a good quality water softener and iron filter to replace their older equipment.  The homeowners also chose to get great drinking water as well and installed a reverse osmosis system.  They now have good quality water throughout the whole home.

This customer had just moved in about a year ago and was not happy with the water conditions in the house. She is on city water, but the water is very hard at 26 gpg. A Project Coordinator met with her, and after talking a bit, found that she was not planning on staying long in the area, so she did not want to put too much money into a new system; so she decided to rent and EVRS-1044 water softener to help with the hard water in the house.

The customer called the Clean Water Center with hard water issues throughout the home. Said that this current softener is about 19 years old. A Project Coordinator went out to the home to assess the water and current softener. After tests, they found that the water had 28 gpg from the pressure tanks, and still had 13 gpg after the treatment equipment on the hot water. The Project Coordinator suggested a new softener and went over options with him.

The homeowner decided to have us install an EVRS-1044 for him. We installed the next week, and the homeowner should be good for the next 20+ years!

Where does Hartford’s drinking water come from?

According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, about 66% of Wisconsin residents get their drinking water from groundwater, and the other 33% source it from Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, or Lake Winnebago. The local government reports that about 4 in 10 people get their drinking water from private wells.

Owners of private wells are responsible for monitoring their private wells to ensure they are safe to drink from. Nitrates and arsenic, for example, are common, naturally occurring contaminants in Wisconsin soil and are often found in private well water. In Outagamie County, for example, the percentage of private wells that tested over the safe level of arsenic in drinking water was nearly four times the percentage of private wells overall in Wisconsin. However, Outagamie County reported lower numbers of unsafe nitrate levels in private wells compared to Wisconsin overall.

The Importance of Filtering Your Water

How unsafe is unfiltered water?

Proper water filtration is essential for maintaining a safe source of drinking water. Even water that is not for consumption (animal or human) should be free of harmful contaminants that can affect our lives in other ways. Water for showering, washing your clothes, nourishing your pets, and even watering your plants should be healthy. Water can be considered “dirty” due to chemical pollutants and disease-causing microbes.

There are several short-term and long-term risks associated with drinking contaminated water. Exposure to chemicals in water can result in skin discoloration or, eventually, damage to the nervous system or organs. Ingesting water with disease-causing microbes is relatively rare in the United States nowadays because of advanced water filtration practices, but that used to be a common spreader of infectious diseases, including typhoid fever and cholera. There are parts of the world where these diseases still run rampant because of inadequate or tainted drinking water supplies.

Common Sources of Drinking Water Contamination:

  • Industry & agriculture— Rainfall and water runoff can carry fertilizer and pesticides into the water system. Storage facilities for these compounds can also spread contaminants through rainfall and water runoff.
  • Human & animal waste— Sewage and septic systems can spread harmful microbes into drinking water systems. Common contaminants found in these scenarios include E.coli and Giardia.
  • Treatment & distribution— Some treatments meant to clean the water can leave behind harmful chemicals such as trihalomethanes. Flaws in the water system, such as broken or rusty pipes, can also contribute to contamination.
  • Natural sources— Groundwater can pass through soil and bedrock that is contaminated with natural arsenic, heavy metals, or radioactive compounds such as radon.

Job Stories From Hartford, WI
Hard Water, Chlorine in Water in Hartland, WI

Customer called the Clean Water Center with issue regarding the hardness and smell in their water. A Project Coordinator went out to the home to test the water and assess placement of equipment in the basement. After a conversation, she found that the customer was not very happy with the overpowering smell of Chlorine in the water from the city. The water was testing at 5ppm of chlorine and the smell was prevalent. They were also finding a lot of calcium build up on the faucets and fixtures. They had just moved in, and knew that they needed to do something about the water, or they would be replacing their water using appliances sooner than they wanted to.

After going through the equipment to take care of their water issues, the customer called the next day to say they wanted to have us install the EVRC-1054 water softener to take care of the chlorine in their water. They also opted to have us install a Clearflo Reverse Osmosis for drinking/cooking. We were able to install for them the next week. They are happy with their water now, and can know that their house is protected from the water from the city.

Iron Curtain Needing Replacement in Hartford, WI

Customer called the Clean Water Center for service as he did not seem to trust his current water treatment company anymore. They came out to fix a few things and after they were there, the water softener stopped working well. He was not impressed with his service from them. We went out to the home to see what was going on. The technician found that there was sediment clogging up the water softener, causing it to fail. Upon closer inspection, it was found that the sediment that was causing the issue was media from inside his iron curtain. The technician suggested for a Project Coordinator to go out to talk about new equipment. He had mentioned that he would recommend both a new iron filter and a softener, since the other softener was fowled up with media from the iron curtain.

A Project Coordinator went out to the home to test the water and assess the placement of new equipment. They discussed new equipment. This all happened right before the holidays so the customer needed it done soon before he had people over. The schedule was pretty booked up, but between management and the project coordinator they were able to get him on the schedule right before the holiday weekend was about to begin. The customer could have company over without having to be embarrassed of his water. He was very happy after all was done.
