Mr. and Mrs. S. were having issues with an aging iron filter and after maintenance was found to be unsuccessful, our technician found that the best route was for replacement. They were noticing yellow water around the house and after testing the water to find how much iron was causing the problem, we found that the EVFE iron filter was the best fit to take care of their iron staining concerns.

Mr. & Mrs. R. had been living on a well for a number of years and experienced everything from iron staining, sulfur odors and hard water issues. They had an aging system in place that was no longer able to be repaired due to a discontinuation, so they wanted to see what modern solutions were available and had worked with us in the past. After finding the existing water conditions, it was recommended that they move forward with our EV2-MIN water conditioner. The EV2-MIN water conditioner is capable of handling high iron, hardness, and low level sulfur odors. So now all their issues are addressed under one system.

Like all mechanical equipment, water softeners do stop working if not taken care of. This customer in Greenville for example purchased a home with an existing softener and did not know much about how they work. They kept salt in the system, and it worked for several years before starting to cause flooding in the basement, but with annual maintenance they can last well beyond their expected lifespan. Now with a new system and regular maintenance there will be a lot less standing water in this basement.

Where does Greenville’s drinking water come from?

According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, about 66% of Wisconsin residents get their drinking water from groundwater, and the other 33% source it from Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, or Lake Winnebago. The local government reports that about 4 in 10 people get their drinking water from private wells.

Owners of private wells are responsible for monitoring their private wells to ensure they are safe to drink from. Nitrates and arsenic, for example, are common, naturally occurring contaminants in Wisconsin soil and are often found in private well water. In Outagamie County, for example, the percentage of private wells that tested over the safe level of arsenic in drinking water was nearly four times the percentage of private wells overall in Wisconsin. However, Outagamie County reported lower numbers of unsafe nitrate levels in private wells compared to Wisconsin overall.

The Importance of Filtering Your Water

How unsafe is unfiltered water?

Proper water filtration is essential for maintaining a safe source of drinking water. Even water that is not for consumption (animal or human) should be free of harmful contaminants that can affect our lives in other ways. Water for showering, washing your clothes, nourishing your pets, and even watering your plants should be healthy. Water can be considered “dirty” due to chemical pollutants and disease-causing microbes.

There are several short-term and long-term risks associated with drinking contaminated water. Exposure to chemicals in water can result in skin discoloration or, eventually, damage to the nervous system or organs. Ingesting water with disease-causing microbes is relatively rare in the United States nowadays because of advanced water filtration practices, but that used to be a common spreader of infectious diseases, including typhoid fever and cholera. There are parts of the world where these diseases still run rampant because of inadequate or tainted drinking water supplies.

Common Sources of Drinking Water Contamination:

  • Industry & agriculture— Rainfall and water runoff can carry fertilizer and pesticides into the water system. Storage facilities for these compounds can also spread contaminants through rainfall and water runoff.
  • Human & animal waste— Sewage and septic systems can spread harmful microbes into drinking water systems. Common contaminants found in these scenarios include E.coli and Giardia.
  • Treatment & distribution— Some treatments meant to clean the water can leave behind harmful chemicals such as trihalomethanes. Flaws in the water system, such as broken or rusty pipes, can also contribute to contamination.
  • Natural sources— Groundwater can pass through soil and bedrock that is contaminated with natural arsenic, heavy metals, or radioactive compounds such as radon.

Job Stories From Greenville, WI
City Water to Well Water in Greenville, WI

Ms. H. was very fortunate and purchased her first home. Not only were there learning curves as a new homeowner, but she now had to learn the ins and outs of the well and septic system. When she moved into the new home she found a twin water softener already in place, which is two softener media tanks working together to provide softened water 100% of the time. Having never had the luxury of a water softener in the past for home protection and skin health, she was not familiar with the silky feel of softened water and decided to put the water softener into by pass. Softened water feels smooth and silky because the calcium and magnesium deposits are removed from the water, and with hard water, it creates a soap scum that layers onto our skin. This dries out our skin and prevents our natural oils from moisturizing ourselves. Due to her decision of by passing her water softener, she came to learn that there were high levels of iron in the water that would cause staining and that the hardness of the water was extremely high, so the orange staining, white crusty build up and corrosion had begun being very evident. With no treatment in place for the water running through all the lines, appliances and fixtures began to become stained and beat up. Iron bacteria began to breed and grew into a slimy substance that filled her toilet tanks and caused an odor similar to sulfur because of the lack of treatment as well. Iron bacteria is a bacteria that feeds off of iron in the water as a food source and is NON-harmful. Although iron bacteria is non-harmful, it is still a nuisance because it causes odors and build up. These are the reasons she decided to give us a call and see what could be done about her water.

One of our Project Coordinators went to see all of her concerns first hand and also speak with her to see what could be done to help her with her water issues. First, it was highly recommended to put the water softener back into service to soften the water and remove the corrosion causing minerals running rampant in the house. She had some hesitancy to this due to the fact of not wanting the slippery feel to her water. We were able to present her with a mixing valve that would introduce just a little hardness into the water to reduce the slippery feeling. Next was to address the iron and iron bacteria. Some water softeners are able to handle lower levels of iron, but her levels of iron were at the point of possibly shortening the life of the softener. We introduced an iron filter that was teamed with our Odor Defender, which is meant to remove the iron from the water and to treat continuously for any odor causing bacteria in the water. Ms. H.’s biggest concern was having safe drinking water at the end of the day, and this was the final step. After getting her home up to par with working grade water that is supplied to all indoor lines, we supplied her with food grade water that is made via our Ultroflow Reverse Osmosis system. Our RO system provides an 80%-98% reduction of absolutely EVERYTHING dissolved in the water, so now she has water in her home that is just as good, if not better, than bottled water. With all water treatment now in place and in service, she has clean water that won’t harm her new home and clean water that won’t harm her body.
