This customer recently purchased a house and immediately noticed that their recently installed water softener could not keep up with the iron.  They were noticing a strong metallic taste to the water as well as orange staining in the shower and sinks throughout the house.  After a service call with Randy where we made adjustments to the existing system to reduce the iron issues, an appointment was made with one of our Project Coordinators to find a better solution for their iron issues.  Nate met with the homeowner and after discussing a couple of options the customer chose one of our EV2 water conditioners to soften and completely eliminate all of the iron in the water!

Mr. M. was helping his mother and sister remodel a recently purchased home and needed to address the water. Mr. M.'s mother and sister had always lived on city water and now they are becoming home owners for a property that has a well. As a follow up to their health and safety testing, we came out a 2nd time for testing of the aesthetics of the water, such as, odor, staining, hardness, etc. After testing and assessing plumbing, it was found that a carbon filter was needed for the small amounts of sulfur gas that was causing a nuisance odor. Due to limitations on space, it was found that an in-line carbon filter was the best option, and they are now odor free.

Where does New London’s drinking water come from?

According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, about 66% of Wisconsin residents get their drinking water from groundwater, and the other 33% source it from Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, or Lake Winnebago. The local government reports that about 4 in 10 people get their drinking water from private wells.

Owners of private wells are responsible for monitoring their private wells to ensure they are safe to drink from. Nitrates and arsenic, for example, are common, naturally occurring contaminants in Wisconsin soil and are often found in private well water. In Outagamie County, for example, the percentage of private wells that tested over the safe level of arsenic in drinking water was nearly four times the percentage of private wells overall in Wisconsin. However, Outagamie County reported lower numbers of unsafe nitrate levels in private wells compared to Wisconsin overall.

The Importance of Filtering Your Water

How unsafe is unfiltered water?

Proper water filtration is essential for maintaining a safe source of drinking water. Even water that is not for consumption (animal or human) should be free of harmful contaminants that can affect our lives in other ways. Water for showering, washing your clothes, nourishing your pets, and even watering your plants should be healthy. Water can be considered “dirty” due to chemical pollutants and disease-causing microbes.

There are several short-term and long-term risks associated with drinking contaminated water. Exposure to chemicals in water can result in skin discoloration or, eventually, damage to the nervous system or organs. Ingesting water with disease-causing microbes is relatively rare in the United States nowadays because of advanced water filtration practices, but that used to be a common spreader of infectious diseases, including typhoid fever and cholera. There are parts of the world where these diseases still run rampant because of inadequate or tainted drinking water supplies.

Common Sources of Drinking Water Contamination:

  • Industry & agriculture— Rainfall and water runoff can carry fertilizer and pesticides into the water system. Storage facilities for these compounds can also spread contaminants through rainfall and water runoff.
  • Human & animal waste— Sewage and septic systems can spread harmful microbes into drinking water systems. Common contaminants found in these scenarios include E.coli and Giardia.
  • Treatment & distribution— Some treatments meant to clean the water can leave behind harmful chemicals such as trihalomethanes. Flaws in the water system, such as broken or rusty pipes, can also contribute to contamination.
  • Natural sources— Groundwater can pass through soil and bedrock that is contaminated with natural arsenic, heavy metals, or radioactive compounds such as radon.

Job Stories From New London, WI
Arsenic Treatment in New London

To the state of Wisconsin, the health and safety threshold for arsenic is 10 parts per billion or lower, for most people any arsenic is undesirable. The DNR recommends annual health and safety testing on a private well. When people discover arsenic in their water there is usually a few questions.

First is, how do you treat arsenic? A certified reverse osmosis drinking water system is our best option for at home arsenic treatment.

Second, should I be worried about showering or cleaning with arsenic in my water? Studies show that arsenic contact with your skin may be a concern in high doses but is not conclusive. What we do know is that if we limit the amount of arsenic, we consume we reduce risk to our health.

Third, can reverse osmosis be connected to a refrigerator water dispenser or ice maker? Yes although reverse osmosis plumbing needs to be done in food grade plastic and some fridges use flexible copper lines which need to be replaced before connecting to reverse osmosis.

High Levels of Arsenic- New London, WI

Mr. W. and Ms. S were moving into their new home in New London, which is an older farm home on a well. While they were excited about the move into the country, they found via inspection that the well tested higher levels of Arsenic. The Arsenic levels were not past the EPA threshold, however it was too close for comfort. We followed up with them after their home inspection and recommended our State Certified Ultroflow Reverse Osmosis system to treat the contaminated water. Due to their recent move and many projects coming up, both expected and unexpected, it was found that a rental drinking system was the best option. The New London family now has peace of mind with cleaner, safer drinking water and plans to eventually purchase their Ultroflow Reverse Osmosis system.

Timing off on Softener - New London, WI

Mr. F. called to see if we could stop over at his home to check over his system.  The timing seemed off, the water seemed hard and his salt alarm was going off even though there was salt in the brine tank.  We were able to get Garrett, our service tech, out to the home to inspect the unit.  Garrett noticed that there were some parts that were not doing the job and had to replace them.  He changed a few parts and tested the water before and after the treatment equipment to make sure everything was working properly before he left.

Paula contacted us to have salt delivered to her home. She also mentioned that her softener appeared to be cycling in the morning instead of the middle of the night. We sent Garrett one of our service technicians out to her home. Garrett filled the brine tank with salt and piled the remaining salt next to the brine tank. He also tested the water, and reviewed the settings on the softener. The time of day on the softener was off so the unit was cycling in the morning instead of the middle of the night. Garrett adjusted the time of day and everything is back to normal.
