New Well with Iron Issues in Oconomowoc, WI
Challenge
This customer called in with concerns because she just had a new well drilled at her rental property and now the tenants are having issues with iron in the water that is staining their laundry.
A Project Coordinator met with her at the rental property and found the water to be extremely hard with 29 gpg of hardness, and 2 ppm of Iron in the water. They didn't currently have any water treatment in place at the house at all. The Project Coordinator suggested a water softener for the hardness, and an Iron Filter for the rust stains.
The biggest challenge was that the house had a very small septic tank that had to be flushed once a month already and putting in all the equipment would cause the septic tank to fill up much faster, as the Iron Filter backwashes every 3 days.
Solution
When the Project Coordinator learned of this challenge, she found that the best solution would be a water softener with fine mesh resin to help with both the hardness and the iron issue. Although this may not take care of all the staining throughout the house, it should be able to stop it from staining their laundry.
We installed the EVR-1044 water softener, with a fine mesh resin, and suggested they use Iron Out salt to ensure that the softeners is cleaned of iron as much as possible. The Septic will still fill up a little faster than usual, but the softener will have less waste water and not regenerate as much as the iron filter. Now the tenants can do laundry knowing their clothes are protected against the iron in the water.
